Rotary is a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.
Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary's people of action have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to better our world, and we stay committed to the end.
Rotary in India has a long and rich history. The first Rotary club in India was established in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1920, and since then, Rotary has played a critical role in the country's social and economic development. Rotary clubs in India are involved in a wide range of activities, from providing clean drinking water and sanitation to promoting education, healthcare, and social welfare.
One of the most significant contributions of Rotary in India is its efforts to eradicate polio. In 1985, Rotary International launched its PolioPlus program, which aimed to eradicate polio worldwide. Rotary in India played a crucial role in this effort, partnering with the Indian government to immunize millions of children against polio. Through its tireless efforts, Rotary in India helped to reduce the number of polio cases in the country from tens of thousands in the 1980s to zero by 2011. This achievement is considered one of the most significant public health victories in history.
